and will help you to understand the concept of our "show".

First, we would like
to thank the judges for their diligence in making the difficult
decisions which helped to make our competition such a success.
It is always hard to assign point scores to the dolls, but then
to have to choose one over another to end up with the final
winners is even more difficult. The judges are ALWAYS aware
that the dolls they are viewing have been made with love and
care, and hard work....sometimes even tears....and to have to
tell someone that there are things wrong with that doll is a
very difficult task.
To make things even
more difficult, in our competition, the judges could not handle
the dolls!!! The dolls were judged totally from the photographs
which you will be able to view on the website. Of necessity,
the judges had to establish a scoring system which allowed for
the differences in judging from photographs and from being able
to actually touch the dolls. One of the things that was agreed
upon, that was a divergence from a regular competition, was
the decision NOT to award any third place positions. This was
not intended to lessen the importance of a second place position,
but to acknowledge the fact that our scoring system was quite
different from the regular method of allocating the points for
the dolls. We could not award any points for the quality of
the workmanship in the cleaning of the porcelain, other than
the cutting of the eyes, for an example. Whether or not the
doll was wearing underwear was another matter where the judges
had to make an assumption in the positive. Even shoes and sox
sometimes became difficult to determine whether or not they
were present.....thus making scoring these items a little difficult.
We are sure that you will find that the job they have done,
under such difficult circumstances, is outstanding!
We have also chosen to
use different colors to designate FIRST and SECOND place awards.
Instead of Blue for First Place, we have chosen MAROON. For
Second Place, we have chosen PINK. The Rosettes are matching
maroon and pink. It was felt that a different color of ribbon
would be suitable as it is certainly a different type of judging
from the norm.
One other thing that
is a little different in our competition. Quite often at competitions,
the judges are publicly acknowledged in some fashion or another.
Due to the ongoing nature of our competition....our "day"
will last at least 3 months, and also due to the excessive amount
of emails that making their identities public could create,
our judges have remained anonymous. I can tell you that they
were highly qualified for the task at hand (which will be evidenced
when you view the dolls and the awards they achieved!) Included
in their ranks were Certified Instructors, a highly regarded
antique doll dealer and collector, and a very experienced doll
teacher. They judged the dolls in their own homes, on their
own computers, located in various parts of Canada and the US.
It was a highly coordinated week, with lots of emails going
back and forth. I felt like "mission control" at times!!!
But in the end, all were happy with the results. So I would
like to say to the judges, on behalf of the PDMN, a HUGE thank
you for your efforts !
The PDMN would also like to give a
HUGE thank you to the individuals and companies who provided
the draw prizes in support of our competition. These gifts
were given out of the desire to support a new venture in the
doll making world. We are extremely appreciative of their
support and would ask that while you are browsing through
the website, you take a moment to
visit
the page
that lists the links to the individual
prize pages. While there, click on any links that lead you
to our sponsor's pages and visit their websites, too. Support
of these companies will help to keep the doll business alive
and active!
We would like to especially thank
the doll makers who took up the challenge to enter their dolls
in such a new venture! Without your wonderful dolls, there
would be no show. Your hard work and talent show in the dolls
you have created, and it is certainly appreciated by Judy,
myself, all the rest of the members of the PDMN and, I am
sure, the viewing public who will find their way to our Internet
Doll Show. Your dolls are wonderful, and so are you!!!
